A Kansas children’s author talked reading strategies with Emporia families in Emporia this weekend.
Kansas City, Kansas native Sue Gallion, writer of “Pug Meets Pig”, was hosted by Mobilizing Literacy and the Lyon County History Center on Saturday morning for an author visit. Gallion led a workshop on developing literacy readiness skills and shared some of the primary tips she was offering to parents.
Gallion says adults can make a major impact on a child’s life by focusing on reading to emphasise the importance, read together to make it playful and encourage questions to create engagement. Mobilizing Literacy Family Liaison, Jodi Case says the birth to age five range is a critical learning time.
Case says events like this are important with summer approaching because they remind families of the continued importance of reading and developing literacy skills. Children were able to make crafts to take home and some even took home copies of the “Pug Meets Pig.” Gallion also did a read aloud with children at the end of Saturday’s visit.
