The first meeting between Emporia Recreation Center committee members and architects took place Wednesday.
Representatives of Gould Evans and Associates and Green Play LLC in Colorado met with the Steering and Recommendation Committees to begin discussions on the long-anticipated expansion project for the Lee Beran Recreation Center. Gould Evans presented projections on what the expansion could potentially look like and took time to address the main concerns of Rec Center staff and committee members.
Commissioner Mike Helbert says one of the main concerns leading to the need for expansion is spacing within the Rec Center itself.
Helbert says committee members all have specific ideas for the expansion, however; he believes the best course of action, for now, is to let the architects steer that conversation.
Also discussed was the desire for a bond referendum to be drafted by early August and placed on the November ballot. John Wilkins with Gould Evans says Wednesday’s meeting was pivotal if they plan to meet that timeline.
The next step will be for Green Play to conduct a market analysis for the needs of current and future patrons.
Proposed renovations would include a new indoor-aquatics facility, expanded parking lot and an more space to indoor facilities
