Updates and meeting plans were the major topics of discussion for the Emporia Rec Commission monthly meeting Monday.
On the agenda was a progress update on the Flint Hills Optimist Ball Diamonds. Original plans were for the fields to be completed by the end of April. It appears those plans will be met as the fields are currently 90 percent complete according to the update from ERC Director Tom McEvoy.
Renovations have been needed with a series of issues developing over time, including sloping and drainage. Last fall, the Optimists donated $20,000 for the upgrades.
Also on the agenda was a discussion on the upcoming meeting with Gould/Evans of Kansas City. The meeting will serve as the kickoff for discussions between commissioners and Gould/Evans about the potential renovations coming to the Lee Beran Recreation Center. Proposed renovations would include a new aquatics facility, expanded parking lot and an increase in space to indoor facilities. McEvoy believes this will increase the overall foot traffic for the Rec Center and also address space issues that have developed over the years as attendance has increased.
The meeting will be at the Rec Center at 2 pm Wednesday.
Commissioners also received a brief update on the launch of their new website, which is scheduled for late July.
The ERC’s next meeting will be May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Rec Center.
