Thanks to the weekend and a holiday on the East Coast, you have two extra days to file your taxes this year.
Tax Day fell on Sunday, and Washington, D.C., celebrates Emancipation Day Monday — so the Internal Revenue Service pushed the filing deadline to Tuesday. Patriots’ Day is also a state holiday in Massachusetts on Monday as well.
Here locally, all taxes and extension requests have to be filed by late afternoon, as opposed to the midnight deadline seen in larger cities. Paperwork has to be filed by 4 pm, and that deadline is in effect both for the main window or the drop box in the alley behind the facility.
Paperwork filed after 4 pm locally will not receive the necessary postage, so it will be considered late. The IRS says extension returns need to be filed by Oct. 15.
