40 area seniors played the final game of their high school careers in the Flint Hills Optimist All-Star Game.
In the girls game, the Blue-All Stars managed to overcome an early deficit from the red squad to come away with the victory 70-66. The Red All-Stars opened the scoring and would lead by four in the early going of the first half and take a nine-point lead into the locker room. In the second the blue squad turned on the offense and managed to take the lead. The red all stars would come as close as one but could not regain the lead as the ladies in blue would go on to win by four.
The Blue All-Stars were lead by Briana Vogts of Olpe with 23 points. The Red-All Stars were led by Karsen Schultz of Wabaunsee with 32 points. Schultz and Vogts would share the MVP title.
Briana Vogts says offense in the second was the key to their victory.
It was a back and forth affair on the boy’s side as the Blue All-Stars pulled out a last-second victory over the Red All-Stars 95-94.
The Blue Squad would take an early commanding lead in the first half before the make it take it rule would help the Red All-Stars gain a three-point lead going into halftime. In the second the Blue All-Stars would trail for the first four minutes before three-point shooting would put them back on top. The Red All-Stars would come within one point but had trouble getting back in control. A three pointer from Emporia’s Dylan Farr would give the Red All-Stars a one point lead with 12 seconds to go in the game. Damon Schmidt would manage a floater in the lane with 1.6 to go giving the Blue Team the one point victory.
The Blue All-Stars were lead in scoring by JJ Wilson of Emporia with 22 points and Damon Schmidt of Olpe with 20. Emporia’s Dylan Farr would lead the Red All-Stars with 30 points. Farr and Schmidt would share the MVP title.
Damon Schmidt says it was a pleasure to play with so many talented individuals from across the area.
Winners of the All-Star three point shooting contest were Calli Dannels of Madison and Branton Tischhauser of Council Grove.
