(KCROYALS) The Kansas City Royals have signed veteran right-hander Clay Buchholz to a Minor League deal, according to USA Today. The club has not confirmed the report.
The 33-year-old Buchholz will reportedly earn $1.5 million if he makes the big league roster, and has $250,000 in incentives in the contract. He made two April starts for the Phillies last season before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm.
Buchholz spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Boston Red Sox.
The Royals’ starting rotation lacks pitchers with substantial experience behind Danny Duffy, Ian Kennedy and Jason Hammel. Should a need arise, and should Buchholz prove effective, he could provide some depth.
The Royals are 10 days away from their season opener on March 29th.
Tuesday night the Royals play the San Francisco Giants. The game will be broadcast on KVOE 1400AM/96.9FM. Coverage begins at 8pm.
Royals outfielder Jorge Soler has had a good spring he shares the lead for most home runs in Cactus league play. He has hit 6 homeruns and shares the lead with Jason Kipnis of the Cleveland Indians for the Spring Training lead.
