The Chicago White Sox tied an MLB record with six opening-day home runs to crush the Royals 14-7 Thursday at Kauffman Stadium.
Matt Davidson homered three times, Tim Anderson belted two and Jose Abreu had one as Chicago joined the 1988 New York Mets as the only teams with six homers in a season opener.
Early on, it appeared the Royals had something going as they reeled off three straight singles in the first inning off former Royal James Shields, capped off by a three-run homer by newcomer Lucas Duda.
Shields settled down after the first and threw five scoreless innings after. The White Sox belted three home runs in the fourth inning including back-to-back blasts by Abreu and Davidson.
Royals’ starter Danny Duffy suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. He also struck out five and walked two.
The Royals will look to even the series Saturday as Ian Kennedy takes the hill against Chicago’s Lucas Giolito.
