The Emporia State baseball team held on for a 7-5 win over Fort Hays State in the first game of a 3 game series.
Emporia State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 base on balls and a hit batter. The Hornets added single runs in the 2nd and 5th innings to take a 5-0 lead. Fort Hays scored their first run in the 8th inning. Emporia State answered with a 2 run home run by Bryce Fischer in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-1 lead. Fort Hays rallied scoring 4 runs on 5 hits in the 9th inning. Seth Holman was the winning pitcher going 8 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 10.
Nathan Gieber earned the save getting the final 2 outs. Emporia State improves to 16-12 for the season and 7-8 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is not 11-20 and 3-15 in the MIAA. The Hornets and Tigers play again Friday evening with first pitch set for 5pm at the Trusler Sports complex.
