Youth participants in the first-annual Dave Hollond Memorial Youth Hunt got to have dinner with their guides, landowners and event sponsors Tuesday.
This year’s event will have 21 youth hunters out with their guides, and Kim Hollond says moving it to Jan. 9 and 10 made scheduling and organizing easier. This event has been known the past six years as the Clint Bowyer Youth Deer Management Hunt, but was renamed to honor longtime organizer and outdoorsman Dave Hollond, who passed away unexpectedly early this year. Kim Hollond says she’s had tremendous help with the event since her husband’s death.

Guides and youth hunters also got to meet with hunt co-sponsor Clint Bowyer. Bowyer says this will be the first year out hunting without Dave Hollond, and that “it sucks,” but they couldn’t just stop working to get kids outdoors and hunting for the first time.

Meat from deer harvested during the hunt is later processed and donated to local charities. Last year’s hunt lasted two days, during which 17 youth hunters harvested a dozen deer.
