Emporia residents are calling the Police Department after receiving scam calls. And once again, the caller is representing himself as an employee of the Internal Revenue Service.
Police Sgt. Kevin Risley tells KVOE News there have been at least two calls from residents who say they have been told they owe money and must call a phone number with a 200-series area code for additional information.
This is the second IRS-related scam to affect Emporia residents this month. About two weeks ago, scammers said certain residents owed a small amount of money to the IRS and could avoid further trouble by paying up front, usually being aggressive in seeking the money.
KVOE News and the Emporia Police Department remind you of the following:
*IRS agents will not call to demand immediate payment.
*IRS agents will not call you about taxes owed without sending a statement first.
*The IRS will not demand payment without giving you the chance to question the assertion or file an appeal.
*The IRS will not require specific payments like pre-paid credit cards for past due amounts.
*Agents will not ask for credit card or debit card information over the phone.
*Agents will not threaten to contact law enforcement or have you arrested for not paying.
If you receive a possible scam call, hang up and call law enforcement.
