The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has released additional information about Saturday’s crash that killed three Emporia teenagers just south of town.
Deputy Zachary Shafer says the Lyon County Coroner has listed drowning as the probable cause of death for 17-year-olds Chase Luby and Shelby Phoenix and 13-year-old Paxton Luby. All three were found inside Chase Luby’s car after it went off Road 147 and went between 15 and 20 feet into the Cottonwood River below, turning upside down before it went into the river. The car was fully submerged when authorities arrived.
Ashley Edwards, 15, survived and was found walking along Road 147 shortly after the crash.
Following Tuesday night’s candlelight vigil at the crash site, a second vigil is slated for 8 pm Friday at Jones Park. Showers and storms are possible, but organizers say the vigil will be a rain-or-shine event.
