USD 386 Madison-Virgil is using a two-phase approach to fill its superintendent position.
Board President Jeff Williams says there will be an interim superintendent for the next year. After that, current assistant superintendent Steve Jowers will take over. Williams says Jowers is the right person for the job.
Jowers has been unavailable for comment.
The transition from Stu Moeckel to Jowers won’t be immediate because Jowers needs to get his superintendent certification. That should happen over the next year.
Moeckel is taking over the superintendent job at USD 491 Eudora come July 1.
Jowers takes over as the district is winding down its COVID-19 mitigation strategies. This shift also comes with the district needing to replace the high school principal post that Moeckel held, as well as the fourth-grade position Moeckel’s wife, Summer, had before their resignation announcement last week. USD 386 is also looking into new facilities, including a building for its new FFA program and a new weight room.
As Jowers transitions to his new job, the district will shift some of his duties. Besides superintendent, Jowers is currently the elementary school principal, transportation director and food service director. Williams says the district will move the transportation and food service duties off Jowers’ plate when everything is settled.
