Coffey County will receive over $2 million for road repairs as part of the Kansas High Risk Rural Roads Program.
The $2.35 million will help to widen Old US Highway 50 between Fauna Road just south of Lebo and US Highway 75, seven miles further east. It will also improve the shoulders over that stretch of highway.
The money is earmarked for federal fiscal 2022, which starts in October.
Coffey County is among 16 counties sharing around $8.5 million in funding as part of this announcement. The HRRR program is a state and local partnership which helps to improve safety for what are called off-system rural roads. The state program can cover 90 t- 100 percent of the costs. Counties make up the difference if needed.
The Kansas Department of Transportation says it is distributing twice its normal funds for the program with federal Coronavirus Relief Funds and Highway Infrastructure Programs funds available to the state.
