Recent cool, damp conditions may have more of an impact on the current planting season than a short-term bout of freezing or sub-freezing temperatures.
Lyon County Extension ag agent Brian Rees had an update on KVOE’s Morning Show recently. He says the overall crop is behind a bit, but it shouldn’t take long to catch up.
Temperatures went slightly below freezing early Thursday and hit freezing early Tuesday. Rees says low-lying areas with wheat could be more susceptible than others, but that may be superficial damage. Some corn has been planted but not much is up at this time. Rees says the crop isn’t growing rapidly due to temperatures, but it shouldn’t see widespread damage.
