Many things have changed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but one thing that has not is the level of support for cystic fibrosis research in the local community.
That support was apparent by the turnout at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium and Twelfth Ave. Baptist Church for the annual Laps 4 Landon event Tuesday evening. The event supports 14-year-old Landon Dody and 5-year-old Aiden Drier — both of whom live with CF — as they continue their battle with the disease.
Landon’s father Aaron Dody says it warms his heart to see that even with all of the changes coronavirus has brought about over the past 12 months the local community is still willing to do anything and everything to support such a worthy cause.
The official walk took place at Welch Stadium with a barbecue at the church. As has been the case for the past several years a number of ESU athletic teams were on hand at Welch providing additional activities throughout the evening.
This includes the ESU Football, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball teams along with the ESU Cheer Team.
A silent auction also took place throughout the evening.
Tuesday’s activities produced a preliminary total of $8,000 with the barbecue generating just over $1,700 alone. All funds will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to support CF research.
Final totals will be announced at a later time.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that creates extremely thick mucus which can clog the lungs and obstruct the pancreas of those afflicted.
