Expect extra law enforcement on highways and byways Tuesday, not just in Lyon County but across the country.
April 20 has become synonymous with marijuana use because of the date’s connection to the popular pot reference number 420, so the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is teaming up with law enforcement across the country to keep drug-impaired drivers off the road Tuesday.
The campaign’s message this year is “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different,” and mounting evidence shows marijuana use — or other drug use — is just as problematic behind the wheel as alcohol. NHTSA says the presence of marijuana has doubled for people tested for pot after fatal crashes between 2009 and 2018. In 2018, almost half the drivers who were killed in crashes and were tested for drug use afterward tested positive.
Marijuana use and possession are still illegal in Kansas.
