Lyon County’s COVID-19 vaccination rates may not be where public health officials want them, but they have increased recently.
Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern had an update on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment on Thursday.
Those numbers reflect percentages of Lyon County’s full estimated population of 33,400. The percentages increase for adults. Millbern says about 34 percent of people ages 18 and older have been fully vaccinated. That percentage jumps to 72 percent for people over age 65.
The vaccination percentage update comes with infection rates and other markers sliding from the significant risk to moderate risk category. It also comes as Public Health and other local partners scrambled to adjust after the federal government took the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine off the table until further notice due to concerns about rare but severe blood clotting. However, Millbern says that’s a step that should build public confidence about the overall process.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine won’t be available for at least a week and maybe for several weeks as the federal investigation continues.
Millbern says Lyon County now may be in a vaccine glut with supply ahead of demand. She has said this opens up the possibility of lower numbers of doses coming in from the state later on if trends continue.
Millbern joins the April 22 KVOE Newsmaker segment at 7:15 am for another COVID-19 response update.
