Newman Regional Health is proudly touting the completion of a major procedure at the hospital just last week.
Last Saturday, Newman performed its first-ever triple organ procurement procedure for kidneys and a liver as well as a cornea donation. The surgery, in cooperation with Midwest Transplant Network, allowed the hospital and the network to assist four individuals.
The donation came from a single patient who sadly passed away after which time the family notified Newman of their “strong desire” to proceed with an organ donation. This led to MTN and Newman beginning a collaboration which led to the successful surgical procedure.
Newman Chief Nursing Officer and COO Julia Pyle says in a news release, “We were humbled by the opportunity to help this family fulfill their loved one’s last wish of giving life to others and seeing hope come out of tragedy.”
MTN is a federally certified, not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that works with donors, families, hospitals, and other professional partners to help give hope and life through organ donations.
Midwest Transplant Network’s Public Affairs Manager Michala Stoker says in the aforementioned news release, “Joining the donor registry is a gift to your family and friends, giving them certainty of your decision, and is a symbol of hope to those awaiting transplantation.”
