Fire crews spent nearly two hours combatting a rekindled grass fire south of Emporia Friday afternoon.
Crews responded to the intersection of Roads 110 and J near the Emporia Municipal Airport around 2 pm after a grass fire from earlier in the week rekindled. According to Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller the fire got into a grove of cedar trees and scorched roughly five acres before crews were able to get it under control.
Crews cleared the scene shortly before 4 pm. No injuries were reported.
The fire danger is high across the KVOE listening area. A red flag warning is in place for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties until 8 pm.
A separate warning is in place for Chase County until 7 pm. Southerly wind speeds have ranged between 20-30 mph throughout the day Friday with occasional gusts as high as 45 mph.
