Local residents are invited to tune into a special memorial service Saturday commemorating the life and death of Notre Dame legend Knute Rockne.
Rockne, who served as the head coach of the Notre Dame football team from 1918-1930, lost his life in a tragic plane crash that killed seven others as well on Mar. 31, 1931. Saturday’s ceremony is being organized by the Knute Rockne Memorial Society of Kansas and will commemorate the 90-year anniversary of that tragic accident.
Memorial Society Director Bernie Kish says the day’s events will not only remember the legacy of Rockne, but also his contributions outside of the game of football.
Recognition will also be given to the other passengers that were on the plane in 1931 alongside Rockne who also lost their lives.
The memorial service will begin at 10 am Saturday at the Chase County History Museum in Cottonwood Falls and due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-person attendance will be limited to 30 people. The event will be streaming on Zoom, however, all of the seats for the Zoom stream have been filled.
