Area firefighters spent the majority of Monday evening battling an enormous grass fire north of the Lyon-Wabaunsee County line.
The fire developed just before 5 pm near the intersection of Road 400 and H, about six miles northeast of Allen. Emporia, Allen-Admire, Americus, Dunlap and Hartford-Neosho Rapids fire crews all responded.
According to Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope, the fire made its way north into Wabaunsee and managed to scorch between 2,500 to 3,000 acres of grass before crews were able to get it stopped near Flint Road. Lake Wabaunsee residents were put on evacuation alert but did not need to leave their homes.
A cause for the fire has yet to be determined. No damages to structures or injuries were reported according to Cope.
