If the start of the 2021 burn season seemed hectic, Emporia Fire Chief Jack Taylor says there’s likely much more to come.
Over the past two months, local firefighters have responded to numerous out-of-control burns across the listening area with crews having to battle multiple fires at a single time more than once. Chief Taylor says if that wasn’t bad enough, we still have yet to hit the “busy” time of the burn season.
Taylor says as the season continues, residents need to be aware that there are different rules for burning in the city limits and out in the county.
Taylor also reminds residents to check the weather forecast several days in advance of a scheduled burn in order to be aware of potential fire danger. Burning will not be permitted within the city limits when wind speeds are above 15 mph and Red Flag Warnings will trigger automatic burn bans within the county as a whole.
Additionally, residents must have a valid burn permit in order to conduct a burn. You can find more information on acquiring a burn permit on the county’s website Lyoncounty.org.
