Lyon County Commissioners held their weekly action session Thursday morning.
During their meeting, commissioners approved a recommendation from Lyon County Zoning and Floodplain Manager Sam Seeley for a final plat in the 1300 block of Road 160. The plat is for the development of the East Logan Subdivision that will bring six new single-family homes to the county.
Commissioner Scott Briggs says the subdivision would be beneficial as the county is in the midst of a housing shortage. Briggs says increasing affordable housing is key to also increasing the county workforce.
According to Seeley all of the major infrastructure, including roadways, is already in place. The land where the subdivision will be located is owned by Larry Fowler.
Word on when construction may begin is currently pending.
In other business, commissioners received a quarterly update on operations from North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging Director Julie Govert-Walter. According to the report, Senior Health Insurance Counselors of Kansas (SHICK Counselors) helped all residents who chose to change their insurance plans save an estimated $1,300 per person in the fourth quarter.
Govert-Walter says she is very pleased with the result and that those dollars will be staying within the local economy.
Commissioners also directed Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods to begin the process of closing a county bridge located on Road U located north of Road 70. The bridge could potentially be rebuilt at a cost of $150,000 to $250,000 or be torn down. Discussions on the county’s next steps will continue in the coming weeks.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
