Not only have Kansans been worried about their physical health during the pandemic, but many have been worried about their financial health.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Monday and one of the topics she addressed was financial assistance. Gov. Kelly says she hopes the well-documented year-long struggles with the unemployment system are turning a corner.
She says they recently installed more technological “patches” and she believes they should soon have all back payments made up and should be able to stay current moving forward. The recently passed American Rescue Plan Act extended both the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance programs through early September, meaning the unemployment system could continue to see high demand.
In addition to Kansans’ being able to get their unemployment in a timely manner, Gov. Kelly says it’s important to receive needed help with rent. The Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance program was announced over a week ago, offering tenants assistance with current or past due rent, and past-due utility and internet bills.
We will have more from Gov. Kelly’s Talk of Emporia this week, covering: Recent legislation and upcoming goals; and getting students back in school.
