This week, the Kansas Adjutant General’s Office is offering rebate money for residents across the state if they plan to build safe rooms at their homes.
This plan, Sunflower-safe, has the full support of Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell.
Sunflower-safe is actually available through funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which is administered by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. The government will reimburse 75 percent of the shelter costs, up to a maximum of $3,500 — if residents install the safe room at a person’s primary residence and are built on property owned by the applicant. The safe rooms also have to meet federal safety standards. This program is currently not available for businesses, schools or nonprofit agencies.
This is a lottery program. Residents approved for funding will have the option of direct deposit or a paper check. If selected, they will also have 30 days to let the state know whether they plan to move forward or opt out of the program.
