From the classic to the modified, mint condition to barely touched, vehicles of all kinds were parked on part of Commercial Street for the Flatland Cruisers’ 27th car show Saturday.
Sam Humphreys of Emporia brought three vehicles to the show: a 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2-door hardtop, a 1957 Chevy Handyman station wagon and a 1949 Willys Jeepster. The vehicles were in varying shape when he bought them.
Working in vehicles is a labor of love, and Humphreys enjoyed getting to the show — even though there was a lot of travel involved.
Tim Haug of Topeka was back in Emporia for the event. His wife is from Emporia and they both graduated from Emporia State University. Haug brought a 1965 Mustang that he purchased from his uncle two years ago. There was a lot of restoration put into the Mustang — as in around 1,500 hours of work.
Haug says he’s planning to be part of more car shows, now that the restoration project is complete.
Besides the show itself, there was a DJ, food vendors and a silent auction. Proceeds this year benefit the club’s automotive technology scholarship at Flint Hills Technical College and, depending on the total, may go to other local causes.
Last year’s event had to be canceled due to COVID-19. This year, 113 vehicles were registered.
