The recent increase in local gas prices and the recent ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline are not directly linked according to Kansas AAA Spokesman Shawn Steward.
During a recent morning show interview, Steward explained the two situations are not related as locally we do not receive our gasoline supply from Colonial. He says the main cause for the increase in local prices, as much as a dime in Emporia, recently is simple supply and demand.
Steward says AAA is currently anticipating that 37 million people will be traveling further than 50 miles from their homes during the holiday weekend.
Of those 37 million Steward says 34 million — roughly 90 percent — will be driving. Steward says the increase in travel as individuals become fully vaccinated and with summer coming up quickly he won’t be surprised if prices were to rise as high as $3 a gallon at some point.
