Lyon County’s stated goal of improving broadband access could well get a significant boost from the federal government.
County Controller Dan Williams had a report during Wednesday’s study meeting. Lyon County is getting over $6.4 million directly from the federal government as part of the American Rescue Plan COVID-19 relief package, with Emporia and smaller communities getting money from the state as a pass-through of federal funds. Money is coming in two batches, with one half in hand as of last week and the rest coming next year. Funds can be used for capital projects enabling work, education or health monitoring in response to COVID-19, but they cannot be used to reduce mil levies, offset reductions in net tax revenues or to bolster pension funds.
Lyon County has started the process of upgrading WiFi service to county buildings with action last week.
In separate money matters, commissioners heard three separate budget requests from allocation agencies. SOS is requesting $26,000, up $5,000 from the approved amount for this year. Director Connie Cahoone says it’s only the second time she has requested an increase in nine years, and the increase is warranted with increased need and decreased grant funding.
The Lyon County History Center is asking for $118,000. Director Greg Jordan says that’s flat with the past three years of funding amounts.
The Lyon County Conservation District asked for $30,000, another flat request. Mallory Burton says the county dollars benefit a variety of projects.
With the study meeting now completed, Lyon County commissioners have varied business to conduct in their action meeting Thursday.
Lyon County Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga and Lyon County Public Health Incident Commander Renee Hively will have the monthly COVID-19 response update. Following discussions about improved WiFi service earlier this month, commissioners will get a broadband presentation from Madison Telephone. County Appraiser Ryan Janzen will present the 2020 Certification of Values.
The meeting will start at 9 am at the County Courthouse.
