Another candidate has emerged seeking election to the Emporia City Commission this election cycle.
William Garner, a Topeka native who has lived in the Emporia community for the past 10 years, filed his paperwork with the Lyon County Clerk’s Office Wednesday. Garner came to Emporia originally to attend Emporia State University attaining a degree in political science in 2015.
He says he is hoping to play a more integral role in a community that has had an integral impact on his life.
If elected, Garner says he wants to focus on ensuring the community is investing its resources wisely for the future. He elaborated saying he would like to begin looking into more options for renewable energy while also continuing work to address the city’s housing shortage.
This is not Garner’s first venture into local politics as he unsuccessfully ran for the position of Lyon County Clerk back in 2012. Garner currently works in the Human Resources Department at Simmon’s Pet Foods.
Garner follows local business owner Travis Hitt and technology specialist Todd Maddox who both filed their paperwork Tuesday.
Back in March, incumbent Jon Geitz announced he would not be seeking re-election to the commission after serving for the past seven years. Fellow incumbent Susan Brinkman has filed, but incumbent Danny Giefer has yet to file for re-election at this time.
The candidate filing and withdrawl deadline is noon next Tuesday.
