With millions expected to be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, local law enforcement will be out to remind residents to buckle up for their trip.
The annual statewide Click it or Ticket campaign officially began on May 21 and will continue through Memorial Day. Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Hayes reminds residents that the purpose of the campaign is to reduce the number of preventable fatality accidents across the state.
This year, AAA Kansas is expecting that that 37 million people will be traveling over Memorial Day Weekend with 34 million expected to be on the roadways. According to statistics from the Kansas Department of Transportation, 345 people are involved in 170 crashes each day in Kansas with half of the fatalities across the state occurring among those who are not wearing a seat belt.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says when it comes to fatality accidents it is not just the individual in the vehicle who is affected.
Both Koelsch and Hayes tell residents that there will be zero tolerance for unbelted drivers and if you are caught without your safety restraint you will receive a ticket. The Click it or Ticket campaign is supported by a grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation.
