Community input is now being sought as the city of Emporia begins discussions on improvements to Santa Fe Park.
Residents can take part in a five-minute survey available online at www.americanrampcompany.com/emporia as the city looks to make improvements to the so-called action park at that location. Mayor Rob Gilligan says there has been a clamoring for upgrades for some time.
Possible improvements at Santa Fe Park will follow improvements at Hammond, Peter Pan and Jones Parks over the last five years and will overlap improvements at Eastside Community Park, which have been underway for over a decade and have largely been driven by the Eastside Community Group.
The survey is active until June 10.
Meanwhile, the city continues to set the stage for bringing electric-assisted scooters to town. The city’s partner, Bird Bikes, is looking to have a fleet at least 100 scooters available with riders downloading an app before using them. There’s no dollar commitment for the city, and Gilligan says the extent of city investment is in the use of space for the scooter fleet.
Discussions continue on where the fleet will be deployed around town as well as where scooters can be used. Proposed amendments, which could be approved at Wednesday’s action meeting, include not allowing scooters on highways like Interstate 35, US Highway 50 or Kansas Highway 99. Bikes and scooters would also not be allowed to park on public streets if they interfere with other vehicles.
