The USD 251 North Lyon County Board of Education went through several key policy issues at its regular meeting Wednesday night.
Board members approved a return-to-normal plan with the COVID-19 pandemic waning. Superintendent Bob Blair says the decision followed a recent discussion with the district’s Return To School Committee.
The district adjustments begin immediately. Board member Tammie Reed was the lone no vote, saying the social distancing recommendation should be removed.
In addition, the board adopted changes to the student handbook, including a new discipline points system. Blair says the system worked well at his prior district, USD 114 Riverside, because of its clarity.
The system gives students points for different violations, with punishments ranging from warnings to out-of-school suspensions. When asked about steps the district has in place to monitor staff behavior, Blair says it’s important to be consistent in applying the district’s rules and regulations. He also says principals play a key role in setting the tone and working with teachers on enforcement as needed.
Separately, the board officially republished the current-year budget to take advantage of over $30,000 in addition special education funding made available by the state. The board also got a progress report on the new preschool, which could go to the engineering phase shortly. The current goal is to finish out engineering by late August. The district wants to have the preschool, which is near North Lyon County Elementary and Junior High in Americus, by fall 2022.
