There were smiles for miles at Camp Alexander Sunday as young cyclists convened for the “climb the camp” race through the Kansas chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
Hundreds of middle school and high school-aged riders were in attendance for the rescheduled event which was supposed to be held in May before heavy flooding rainfall forced the postponement. Kansas NICA League Director Tina Khan says it was an exciting day from start to finish.
Khan went on to thank all of the volunteers and the Emporia community in general for the support that Kansas NICA has received saying it would not be possible without them.
Riders competed in three different age groups — 6th through 8th grade, freshman and sophomore and juniors and seniors — throughout the early morning and afternoon hours with the top riders receiving awards at the end of the day. Khan says the competition is great, however, the awards are really secondary to the competitors and coaches.
Eight teams in total were in attendance for the race. For more information on Kansas NICA and upcoming events visit their website Kansasmtb.org.
