A risk of severe weather is now in place for most of the KVOE listening area into the early morning hours Friday.
Lyon, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are part of a watch that extends to 3 am. Wind gusts to 80 mph and hail to the size of ping pong balls are the main risks, although an isolated tornado is still possible.
Osage and Wabaunsee counties are already in a flash flood watch until 7 am Saturday for the widespread risk of 2-4 inches of rainfall with higher totals possible during the alert period.

2 pm Thursday: Flash flood watch announced for Osage, Wabaunsee counties from 7 pm Thursday to 7 am Saturday
Heat, humidity, severe weather and heavy rainfall are possible across the KVOE listening area into the upcoming weekend.
In fact, the prospect of several rounds of heavy rain has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 7 pm Thursday to 7 am Saturday. The Weather Service says these counties and others in northeast Kansas could receive anywhere from 2-4 inches of rain during the alert period, increasing the risk of flash flooding.
The watch comes on top of stifling conditions already in place. Air temperatures were nearing 90 degrees around 1 pm with heat indices just shy of 100. Air temperatures could still reach the upper 90s, pushing heat index readings up to around 105. That sets the table for a slight risk of severe weather for Thursday evening. Hail and high winds are the main severe weather risks, although isolated tornadoes are possible.
For Friday, showers and storms enter the forecast picture by early afternoon. As is the case Thursday, hail and winds are the main severe concerns but tornadoes can’t be completely ruled out. There is currently a slight risk of severe weather. Friday will be another sultry day with highs in the mid-90s and heat index readings near 100.
There is also a marginal risk of severe weather for Saturday evening. Hail and wind are the main concerns.
