Blustery winds and high temperatures were not enough to keep the spirits down at the grand opening for the Lyon County Fairgrounds multi-use pathway on Thursday.
The new paved track takes a one-mile loop around the fairgrounds and accommodates a host of activities including walking, jogging and bike riding.
Lyon County Commission Chairman Rollie Martin said he is ready to see the new track benefit the Emporia community long into the future.
The pathway was a collaborative effort between numerous organizations including Healthier Lyon County, the Lyon County Fairground Foundation, Lyon County Road and Bridge, the Lyon County Fair Board, the City of Emporia and more. The track’s construction was funded through a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant.
In addition to the ribbon-cutting, the Emporia Recreation Commission held a special 5K as part of its annual Super Series.
