Power was restored to nearly 2,000 Evergy customers following a major outage Friday evening.
The outage was reported around 7:15 pm affecting roughly 1,900 customers in eastern Emporia. According to Evergy Spokesperson Andrew Baker, the outage was the result of a microburst that blew through the area.
Customers were without power for just over three hours with power being fully restored around 10:30 pm. A connection hasn’t been confirmed, however, several stoplights were reported as out and the Lyon County Emergency Communications Department was on full backup power with the non-emergency line non-operational. The Communications Department is back at full power according to its Facebook page.

Friday 8:30 pm: UPDATE: Microburst, believed cause of major power outage in east Emporia

According to Evergy Spokesperson Andrew Baker, the outage was caused by a microburst in the area. Details on damages are currently pending.
Baker says crews are currently working to restore power, however, a restoration time is not available. The outage was first reported around 7:15 pm
A connection hasn’t been confirmed, but several stoplights have been reported as out and the Lyon County Emergency Communications Department says its center is on full backup power with the non-emergency line not operational. Overall phone service at the center is at half-capacity. 911 calls will roll to a partnering county for emergencies if needed.
Friday 7:30 pm: Major power outage reported on Emporia’s east side
Close to 2,000 Evergy customers in east Emporia are without power.
The outage was first reported around 7:15 pm. A cause has not been determined.
