With last year’s Downhome Days being canceled to due COVID-19, the Olpe community is welcoming the event back with open arms this weekend.
The town hosted a multitude of activities throughout Saturday including softball tournaments, bike races, kid’s fishing derby and craft and vendor booths with lunch provided by the Olpe Lions Club.
Lisa Brinkman of the Olpe Lions Club says events like these are a community effort first and fundraising project second.
Local game warden Aaron Scheve who helped with the fishing derby explains the importance of having Downhome Days back.
Evening events included a parade, the annual Olpe Firefighters’ barbecue, a servicemen and servicewomen appreciation activity and street dance.
Downhome days continue on into Sunday with an archery tournament at Olpe Jones Lake with check-in at 7:30 am and tournament play starting at 8 am, followed by a poker run at the Olpe High School parking lot with registration at 11:00 am and the race starting at 12pm.
Fundraising through various prize drawings is setting the foundation for a splash pad to be installed in Olpe Jones Park.
