Former Emporia city manager Steve Commons has officially retired from city government.
Commons was part of Emporia city government from 1986 to 2006, when he took an assistant city manager position in Edmond, Oklahoma. Commons was planning on a career in law, but an internship in the Emporia city manager’s office in 1978 changed his career direction.
While in Edmond, Commons was responsible for overseeing city finances, human resources, information technology, community image and parks and recreation.
All told, Commons is retiring with 35 years of work experience in city government.
