Recent information provided by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shows a modest increase in the number of COVID-19 variant cases.
Lyon County now has 27, including nine of the highly-publicized delta variant. That’s up 11 from July 7, but it is a small percentage of the overall 4,351 cases reported by Lyon County Public Health since March 2020. The other 18 variant cases are of the alpha variety.
Elswehere across the KVOE listening area:
*Chase County has four variant cases, three of the alpha strain and one of the delta. The county now has 282 total cases, up two from July 9. It also has three deaths, unchanged from the prior report.
*Coffey County has two variant cases, one each of the delta and epsilon versions. It has 764 cases, up 11 from July 9. There have been 23 deaths, or no change from the previous report.
*Greenwood County has two variant cases, one each of the alpha and delta varieties. The total caseload is 589, up eight from July 9. Deaths remain at 11.
*Morris County has two variant cases, one each of the delta and gamma versions. It has 611 cases as reported by KDHE, up 13 from July 9. There have been 23 deaths, flat from the prior report.
*Osage County now has seven variant cases, with six alpha and one delta case confirmed. The county now has 1,288 cases, up 15 from July 9. Deaths remain stable at 26.
*Wabaunsee County has five total variant cases, three of the alpha strain and two of the delta. The total caseload is 721, up 16 from July 9. Deaths remain steady at 14.
Meanwhile, vaccination rates are creeping up but are not where health officials want them as the delta variant causes more concerns about public health and safety.
*Lyon County currently has 48.6 percent of its eligible population ages 12-plus fully vaccinated and 52.2 percent with at least one dose.
*Chase County has 39.6 percent of its eligible population fully vaccinated and 41 percent partially vaccinated.
*Coffey County has 43.4 percent of its eligible population fully vaccinated and 46.9 percent partially vaccinated.
*Greenwood County has 46.6 percent of its eligible population fully vaccinated and 49.3 percent partially vaccinated.
*Morris County as 48.8 percent of its eligible population foully vaccinated, the highest percentage areawide. Currently, 51.5 percent are partially vaccinated.
*Osage County has 42.7 percent of its eligible population fully vaccinated and 46.3 percent partially vaccinated.
*Wabaunsee County has 43 percent of its eligible residents fully vaccinated and 45.8 percent partially vaccinated.
Mitchell County has the state’s highest vaccination percentage for eligible residents at 53.1 percent. Stevens County has the lowest at 27.2 percent.
