If reports circulating Wednesday are correct, Texas and Oklahoma want out of the Big 12.
The Houston Chronicle reported the Red River rivals are both interested in joining the SEC, which would create a 16-team superconference if 75 percent of the conference’s established schools agree. Commissioner Greg Sankey isn’t commenting, and neither are administrators at OU or Texas. The Chronicle report, however, which used “a high-ranking official with knowledge of the situation,” said an announcement could be made within a couple weeks.”
Both schools were apparently close to leaving the Big 12 in 2010, but Texas A&M and Missouri left for the SEC that year. Texas and Oklahoma are the Big 12’s marquee programs, so their departure could throw the conference’s future up in the air. The potential move already has opposition in the Big 12 from Oklahoma State and in the SEC from Texas A&M.
