Another area county has been added to a heat advisory that is ultimately covering much of eastern Kansas before it expires Saturday evening.
Greenwood County is included until 7 pm. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties remain in an advisory until 8 pm.
There were concerns of heat index readings as high as 110. That failed to materialize, but heat indices were still quite uncomfortable. Emporia’s heat index topped out at 104, with Eureka reaching 106.
11:30 am Saturday: Heat advisory expanded; some locations could have heat indices approaching 110 Saturday afternoon
The heat advisory initially affecting Wabaunsee County has been expanded to cover most of the KVOE listening area.
The National Weather Service now has Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties in an advisory from 12-8 pm. Air temperatures will be in the mid-to upper 90s, but heat index readings reached 100 degrees by noon and could hit 110 in spots by early evening.
This is the start of what could be an extended period of oppressive heat. Storms could provide some relief Sunday and Monday, but air temperatures could approach 100 as soon as Wednesday. and heat index readings will likely be at or above 100 through next week.
