Lyon County deputies are now investigating two fires discovered at the same address in less than a week.
On Wednesday, deputies were told about a pickup truck that had fire damage inside the vehicle at 687 Road 170, although there was no evidence of fire reaching the exterior. On Sunday night, deputies, Emporia’s rural fire unit and Americus Fire battled a house fire at that address. The abandoned house was already fully engulfed in flames when fire crews and deputies arrived. The exterior walls were left standing, but the house was listed as a total loss.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says investigators are looking for certain pieces of information as their research process continues into Sunday night’s fire, including color of smoke and vehicle or foot traffic nearby.
Deputies are not saying whether the Sunday night fire is suspicious, but this is the same address where deputies responded to a past arson call involving a burned-out pickup truck this past Wednesday — and Koelsch says authorities “have more questions than answers” about the two incidents.
Deputies are getting help from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as they research the fire discovered last week. There are no suspects in that incident.
