With a blood supply shortage accompanied by high demand, the American Red Cross is partnering with several local organizations for some critically important blood drives coming soon.
Northern Heights High School students will be hosting the next blood drive on Thursday in Americus. Set in the Northern Lyon County Junior High School gymnasium, the blood drive will begin at 11:30am and last until 6pm. Donations will be accepted to provide funding for North Lyon County FFA.
Donors will all receive a $10 Amazon gift card and will be entered into a drawing to win free gas for an entire year.
With the potential for a large amount walk-ins, drive organizers are being careful to make sure everything coordinates smoothly. Those planning to donate are asked to set up an appointment time prior to their visit.
Susan Faler of the American Red Cross says blood donations right now are “liquid gold” and that they are crucial during the summertime when it may be difficult to find time in everyone’s busy schedules.
Preparations are in place for other opportunities to donate “liquid gold.”
The annual Battle of the Badges blood drive is coming up from August 11-13. Held at the Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church, Battle of the Badges will feature Emporia Police, Emporia Fire, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and added Lyon County Emergency Communications dispatchers this year.
Along with the addition of the Lyon County Emergency Communications dispatchers, Faler says that there are some other differences from past years.
Those who donate blood can vote for their favorite first responder to see who will win the heralded Battle of the Badges trophy for year-round bragging rights. A fun competition supporting the common good, donations will go to the American Red Cross.
