Welcome changes are coming in the forecast. They just won’t get here yet.
Excessive heat warnings cover the area like a hot, wet blanket — and for at least one area county, the warning has been extended. Greenwood County is now in a heat warning until 9 pm Saturday. Lyon County and all other surrounding counties are in a heat warning until 9 pm Friday.
Air temperatures will reach 97 in Emporia on Friday and 99 on Saturday with heat index readings between 103-110, so there is a chance our current heat warning could be extended. Thursday saw a high temperature of 97 and a peak heat index of 106, reaching that mark before noon and again by mid-afternoon.
There is a slight chance of thunderstorm activity Saturday afternoon, but there is a better chance of storms early Sunday morning as a cold front approaches. Sunday’s high will be 87, and next week will see highs in the mid-80s.
