Strong storms developed southwest of Emporia and pulsed to occasionally severe levels Tuesday afternoon.
A cluster started in Marion County and pushed to near Cottonwood Falls and Strong City before losing steam. As it dissipated, another storm developed that affected the southern half of Lyon County. Nickel-sized hail, heavy rain and intense lightning were the main issues.
Rain totals varied widely just in Emporia, from 0.15 inches at the KVOE studios to 0.85 inches at 10th and Weaver.
Storms also knocked out power to over 220 Evergy customers from Emporia to Madison at the peak of the storm. Over 160 customers are without power as of 9:30 pm, with most of the outages near the Emporia Municipal Airport and Emporia Golf Course.
There has also been a utility pole fire in the same area. Emporia Fire was called out to the 1000 block of Kansas Highway 99 after sparking pole caused a tree fire. Emporia Fire is waiting for the pole’s power to be isolated so they can handle the fire.

Strong storms have erupted southwest of Emporia.

*South Lyon County: Severe thunderstorm warning until 5:45 pm. Includes Emporia, Hartford, Neosho Rapids and Olpe. Main concerns are 70 mph winds and ping pong ball-sized hail.
About 100 Evergy customers from Emporia to the Emporia Municipal Airport are currently without power.
