Battle of the Badges starts at noon at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church, with donation times available Thursday and Friday as well. The blood drive has always served as a friendly competition between the participating agencies, and this year law enforcement — Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies — will be in one category. Police Officer Dominick Vortherms says law enforcement has an advantage in this competition.
The agencies are striving for the title of most popular department, and there are always some enticements on the way. Lyon County Emergency Communications is participating for the first time, and spokesperson Christine Johnson says the department is going the sweet route.
Lyon County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jill Cook touted the department’s healthy option.
Meanwhile, Emporia Fire will serve Fire Marshal Reason Bradford’s legendary hot dogs.
There is an urgent need for blood as summer continues. Red Cross spokesperson Susan Faler is hoping for 282 usable units of blood by Friday afternoon, and she had tips so donors can be ready.
Appointments are strongly recommended by calling 800-RED-CROSS or by going online to www.redcrossblood.org. Masks will also be needed, and blood stations will be socially distanced due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases. Blood drive hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday and 8 am to 2 pm Thursday and Friday. Unlike past years, there will not be daily results for most popular agency.
