There are still plenty of openings available for residents to help local law enforcement, first responders and the American Red Cross save lives this week.
The annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is underway through Friday afternoon at Twelfth Ave. Baptist Church. The three-day event began Wednesday and turnout was steady, but not quite what organizers had hoped.
According to Red Cross personnel they were hoping to collect a total of 131 pints of blood Wednesday, however, only 100 appointments were scheduled. Long-time volunteer Sherry Smiley says it is the time of year where people are wrapping up vacation ahead of the start of the school year which could be playing a role in the low appointment numbers.
She says she is hopeful the attendance will pick up in the coming days as the need for blood is always high.
The annual blood drive serves as a friendly competition between the participating agencies which again includes the Emporia Police Department, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Emporia Fire. New to the competition this year is Lyon County Emergency Communications.
Appointments are strongly recommended by calling 800-RED-CROSS or by going online to www.redcrossblood.org. Masks will also be needed, and blood stations will be socially distanced due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases. Blood drive hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday and 8 am to 2 pm Thursday and Friday. Unlike past years, there will not be daily results for most popular agency.
