Optional mask use inside school buildings will be the norm for USD 251 North Lyon County this upcoming school year.
During the Board of Education’s meeting Wednesday evening the board voted to amend the district’s back-to-school plan to reflect changes at the state level for mask use on district buses and transportation. Per the board’s decision, mask use will be mandatory on buses or while using district transportation, however, optional mask use will be the standard elsewhere.
The board chose to maintain its decisions on optional mask use within district buildings as well as the guidance for students and staff to maintain three feet of social distance whenever possible. According to Superintendent Bob Blair, this should not be difficult given the district’s average class sizes.
Blair says the board felt it was important to allow parents to have the ultimate say on whether or not their students mask up while attending school.
In other business, the board approved the district’s 2022 budget for publication Wednesday evening. According to Blair, the 2022 budget includes a general fund of just over $3.2 million and a local option budget of right around $1.1 million.
Blair says the numbers are “about what we expected.”
The board will hold two public hearings ahead of its regular meeting on Sept. 8 at 6 pm and 6:30 pm respectively. The first hearing will be for the district’s revenue neutral rate and the second will be for the budget itself after which time the board could finalize the 2022 budget.
