It is well known that Emporia High school has a rich wrestling tradition.
51 individual state champions and 11 team championships.
Winning 1 individual state championship is an accomplishment winning more than 1 is impressive. To win 4 state titles is spectacular. Dusty Spalding is the only Emporia High wrestler to win 4 state titles.
He won the state title at 119 pounds as a Freshman, won at 125 pounds as a sophomore, won at 130 pounds as a Junior, and won at 135 pounds as a senior when the Spartans won the team title in 2000.
For his high school career, Dusty finished with a 131 and 8 record. He was the Dave Schultz Award winner his senior year as the top wrestler in Kansas.
He also earned a Junior National Greco-Roman Championship at 132 pounds in 1999.
He was also an 8-time kids state wrestling champion.
He was rated as the #2 recruit at 135 pounds in the nation.
Dusty would go to Nebraska and be a 4-year starter.
