Emporia State University is in its final preparation mode before classes begin Monday. That preparation involves new policies related to COVID-19.
ESU is now requiring face masks in all Emporia campus buildings. Previously, ESU was mandating masks in classrooms, laboratories and the Student Wellness Center while encouraging mask use elsewhere indoors. Increased COVID-19 cases in Emporia and Lyon County, as well as the high transmission rates for the delta variant, were listed as reasons for the new procedures.
There is one notable exception. Masks can be removed in self-contained offices or residence hall rooms if nobody else is around, according to Director of Media Relations Gwen Larson.
This does not affect the current policy for outdoor activities. Masks are not required outdoors.
ESU says unvaccinated students, faculty or staff exposed to COVID-19 must quarantine for 14 days, meaning stays at home — no class or work — and avoiding contact with others. Vaccinated people do not need to quarantine unless they show symptoms.
The university pushed towards the start of the semester with its fall General Assembly on Thursday as students began moving into residence halls in force on Friday. During the General Assembly, President Allison Garrett said one of the focal points this year is supporting students as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter operations.
Garrett also highlighted several headlines that may have been overshadowed by the virus, including renovations to Abigail Morse Hall, the recently-completed Prophet Aquatic Research Center and the soon-to-be completed Kossover Tennis Complex.
Students moving in this weekend need proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test before they begin. In a change from last year, students can use the regular dining facilities or they can use a to-go approach. If they eat inside the dining facilities, they will need masks as they enter but can take them off as they eat.
